A GIFT
QUESTION OF OWNERSHIP. (United Press. Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, June 15. Lord Kilbracken, grandson ut the founder of Canterbury, John Robert Godlev, has written a letter to “lhe 'Times’’ on the announcement on June 0 of the gift by Viscount Bledisloe ot a candelabrum to the Church of St. Lawrence Jewry. The candelabrum was the Canterbury Provincial Government s gilt to Gouley and the announcement said St, Lawrence Jewry had been selected to receive it, as it is the London chinch of New Zealanders.
Lord Kilbracken, in his letter, said
"me gut might suggest that a member of Any family,’ flagrantly 'disregarding sentimental considerations, sold the candelabrum, which Lord JJkciisioe subsequently purchased. Godlev, my grandlather, died in 1861, and ' ; mv grandmother carefully preserved the candelabrum until she died in-1907. it then came into the possession of my father, who was never even approximately m the position of having to sell Ins effects, and certainly would not-ha.e sold the candelabrum. ■'
‘•Nevertheless, when my father died in 1932, the candelabrum was myster-
iously missing. “While L do not suggest that JUird Biedisloe did not come'into possession of. it legitimately, I hope that,-, when he returns from Rhodesia, he will help to clear up the mystery.", .
