AVELLINGTON, March 9,
AVhen the Greymouth Harbour Board Reconstitution Bill was being debated in the Legislative Council to-day, Hon W. H. McTntyre said he was in full accord with the provisions of tho Bill, but would like to take the opportunity of drawing the Government’s attention to the position at AVestport. “Westport harbour is a much more important harbour than Greymouth' harbour,” Mr Atclntyre said, “but at present AVestport harbour is controlled by a secre-tary-manager, The people of Buller should be permitted to control their own harbour.” .
The result of the present control, said Mr 'Mclntyre, had been a deterioration of the harbour, which could not accommodate all the shipping that wanted »to bunker there. If there had been a harbour board in charge, it would have seer that the dredge was kept going. The Government should go into the question of reconstructing the Westport Harbour Board. The Leader of the Council (Hon M. Fagan) said he agreed with, many of the sentiments Air McTntyre had expressed, but. would remind him that the blame for the change in control had not been altogether on the Government of that day, but on the lack of public snirit at Westport. “I would suggest” 1 said Mr Fagan, “that representations would come with greater force from the people of that district,, and T think that before the Government could undertake to hear the case, representations should he made from the Westport district to the Government.”
