The Mayor requests that all business premises within the Borough observe a whole holiday on Wednesday, 16th inst on the occasion of the Hokitika School picnic.

Knowles (Hokitika) appeared in the list of those who passed the full examination published in our issue yesterday. Mr W. A. Service, senior inspector of schools for the Canterbury iiduivtion Board, addressed a meeting >n teachers of the district at the Hokitika School on Thursday morning. There was an attendance of about 40 teachers, with whom Mr Service d scussed possible changes in the school curriculum as a result of the abolition of the proficiency examination.

The ninth annual Health Stamp campaign for the benefit of the children will end on February loth, after which day the twopenny Health stamp. Id for postage, Id for health —will he withdrawn from sale. This Post Office effort for the health camps so splendidly reinforced by voluntary workers has been responsible in tin' last, three campaigns for providing over £30,000 lor the organisations conducting camps throughout the Dominion. The current campaign has already reached the satisfactory position of stamp sales approximating one million in number. The Health stamp is thus established as the principal financial resource of this valuable movement and the needs ol the current season will lie all the greater because good summer weather has extended the opportunities for healthful holidays in the camps. Much will depend on the final results of the Health stamp appeal whether these camps can he prolonged while good weather lasts, finance being the only limitation imposed on the good work.

At last evening’s meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council a letter was received from the Westland County Council forwarding a copy of a resolution passed at the last council meeting held on February Bth, that the Council apProve of the change of purpose of so much of Reserve No. 725, Town of Hokitika, as is required for Fire Brigade purposes; and the Hokitika Borough Council, be authorised to proceed tinner the Public Reserves, Domains and National Parks Act, 1928, to have the required area altered to municipal purposes,. It was, after discussion decided to get the opinion of a solicitor on the matter.
