The Carnoustie course was stretched -to nearly 7000 yards for the first round of the British open championship. As a result the character of some of the holes was greatly altered compared with the qualifying rounds. The par of the course is 72. For to-day's play there was a stiff wind blowing. ' ’ ■ vAfter the triumph of the Americans in the qualifying rounds there . was J 1 deepening pessimism concerning British prbspectk but to-day’s outlook fraS much better for the British players than was anticipated. A feature of the morning was the come-back of the holder of the title) Alfred' Padgham, who tied for an early lead with' the Scotsman, W. M. McMinn, who registered a surprise performance. Padgham took three putts at the first hole, arousing fears for another round of missed chances, but lie quickly struck brilliant form. T. H.
