UNEMPLOYMENT
A REASONABLE DECLINE / (Per British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, July 6. Referring to employment in the. House of Commons, Mr Ernest' Brown, Minister for Labour, said that last year the numbers available for employment rose sharply, as did those ,in work, . reaching a record never approached since statistics hgd been keptThe unemployed also showed a reasonable decline. All the principal industries shared in the improvement, including the contracting industries. However, although it was a satisfactory year for the Ministry, there was no cause for complacency and they could' not be satisfied witli what had taken place. He proposed in September to send out the Parlimentary Secretary with the Permanent Secretary to visit- different divisions and examine particularly the difficulties of elderly men, ’ the large numbers of young men who m* - or had an opportunity to work at ail, and tlje domestic service. They hoped to arrive at a cost of living index fully of the ordinary working class. A committee had also been appointed to reconsider the question of holidays with pay. 1
