DOMINION OFFICE
ITS ABOLITION 1 * J SUGGESTION DISCUSSED, (Per Press Association —Copyright). (Received this day at 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, May 17. Berriedale Keith, in an article in the “Guardian” considers much cart be said for the suggestion for the abolition of the Dominions’ Office, placing Dominion affairs within the sphere of the Foreigr. Office except inasmuch as it does not accord with the doctrine of Empire relations, not international. A better idea would be to place inter-imperial affairs with the Parliamentarv Secretary.
Keith considers General Hertzog cannot expect New Zealand and Ansthalia to support claims to the right of secession and neutrality, as New Zealand and Australia are impelled by self-preservation to cherish intimate relations with Britain. It is difficult to see what change can he made in treaty procedure and form of Commonwealth association without disadvantage to the Dominions, which already enjoy full freedom, with the advantage or the service; of. British diplomacy if they! desire., ' '
