MR SIL VERST ONE ’ S FACTORY
GOVT PURCHASE RENTED
DUNEDIN, November 11
. For some months reports have been current in Dunedin that Mr Mark Silvers!one’s joinery factory has been purchased by the Government to supply materials for carrying out the State’s housing plan. The reports became so persistent as to suggest that they had some foundation in fact, | lucre especially when a circumstantial addition was made that the factory I had been sold to the Government Tor £7OOO. When the rumours were referred to the Minister for Housing (Mr J. A Lee) to-night he issued an unequivocal denial. An inquiry respecting the matter v, as received to-night from Auckland, and when 3lr Siiverstone was asked whether any negotiations had taken place between himself and the Government, he replied; “I am. not making any statement. If you want any information inquire from the Minister.” Telephonic communication was then established with Mr Lee in Wellington, and the nature of the re ports that have been in circulation was explained to him. “It is all bunkum,” Mr Lee said. “There is nothing in it at all. I am beginning to wonder where all these 1 umours come from and am thinking ol making a collection of them.’ “You caii say- without any hesitation, ’ he. continued ( “that th e joinery factory of Mr Siiverstone has never been offered to the Government at any stage. Mr Siiverstone has never even discussed the matter of his fac- , tory with me.” “When the housing scheme 1 is. properly under way, we shall require a great deal more joinery than can be supplied by our own factories,” Mr 7,ee added He said that the Gov-J eminent had a definite plan about requirements, and would purchase materials of the highest quality at the cheapest possible price.
