Delpy by the Government in putting the housing scheme into operation. and tlie procedure into operaadopted'by .the State Advances Corporation towards applicants for building loans, are stated to be haviiig an adverse effect on the building trade. - With tke public waiting to see what the Government intends to do in providing homes, there has been a general slackening-off in cottage construction. This is. stated to he’ causing many sections of the building industry serious concern, par+'cularly the small builder and the firms supplying his timber.
• Even when the State’s housing scheme is in full swing, the hinder in a small way in Wellington expects'to .receive a little benefit, if any, since it is-the (intention of the Department of Housing, in the erection of dwellings in Wellington, -to ' call for contracts ’ for houses in a multiple of 20. .It is stated that small builders in Wellington, are not in , a position to undertake the construction of 10 houses, let alone 20. , and finance them during building. Three houses, or at most four, was the limit for which the small builder could contract.
