(Received this day at 10.15 a.m.) LONDON, November 11.
The “Times” aeronautical correspondent says the Air Ministry has approved of negotiations to supply a number of Lockheed Electra air liners for air mail service betweetn London and Sweden, for which British Airways has received a subsidy of £20,000 per annum. Hitherto it has been obligatory to use only British aircraft on subsidised routes.
This decision, which is serious, is due firstly to British manufacturers’ in'ability to supply for many months the twenty sealer planes stipulated in the subsidy agreement, secondly to the Air Ministry’s recent order for DH 86’s whereon the company intended to rely in the meantime, which must not fl.v at night. Lockheed’s have promised delivery in four months, whereas suitable British planes would be unavailable for nine months.
