MATCH DRAWN

M.C.C. V. VICTORIA HOME TEAM ALL OUT FOR 384. [By ,T. B. HOBBS. Copyright in all countries. Reproduction in whole or in part forbidden.]

MELBOURNE, November 10

Rain interferred with the last day’s play in the match Between the Marylebone Cricket Club and A ictoria, which ended in the inevitable draw. England was led on the fisrt innings for the first time this toui. There was some' excitement, for the eighth wicket fell with Victoria still wanting five runs to tie. Nothing else hung on the game, but the small crowd got some local interest out of the play. It was typical English weather, and before lunch only four overs were bowled. Heavy rain wet the 'pricket before the tarpaulins | were put in place, and this took the pace out of it, and rendered the fast bowlers almost innocuous. During lunch a hailstorm gave the grass asnowlike appearance. The best thing .when play was resumed late in the afternoon was a snap catch by Sims at second slip, taken--low down with the left hand, that dismissed Barnett. ■'

..... Gregory .was bowled* by .. Farnes as he tried to ffiopk, a . ( gop(l length ball.' He had continued his innings steadily7~ takjrt.frVCpo ~Visits. Gregory has all the shots’ except the drive,’'wkicii ho is jpo^tall enough to execute properly. So far he does not put a great deal of power into bis strokes. Eventually, Victoria gained a 'lead of 40 ,and the game ended with England having 60 minutes’ batting . practice. Rain during the match robbed • botb sides of many pounds, and the spectators of the cricket they bad keenly anticipated. The Melbourne weather is notoriously unsettled at this time of the year. Two substitutes fielded for England—Verity . taking the place of Voce, who has strained . rib muscles and! also has a cold. Voce must rest for at least a fortnight. C'opsin fielded for. .'Barnett, who, though fielding magnificently yesterday, was sore through a hump received on the ribs while batting on Friday.

The weather is . handicapping Alien seriously, because England has only three more matches before the first test, and many things need settling. He has not decided on bis first wicket pair, c his howlers, or the eleven as a whole, q.

Injuries narrow the : field of selection. Fames did* noti howl as fast as I expected, though he was impressive before lurifch yesterday, when he might have taken some more wickets. The English batsmen are not playing the 1! slow bowling as well as they ought. It is not only footwork, but judgment, that they need. Some bf ! the batsmen play the slow howling best, and others prefer the fast, but an England batsman should shape equally well against both.

The team’s form, to. Say the least, is enevcn—neither convincing nor satisfactory—though wo should make some allowance for injuries. Scores-
