THE PRESENTATION FUND.

(To the Editor)

Sir,—l would esteem it* a favour it you would print this correction to Mi George Perry’s letter regarding the proposed collection of a fund with which to make a" presentation to Mr Jas. O’Brien, M.'P.

The “forced levy” is neither forced nor a levy. The contribution i s purely voluntary on the part of the donors. I The collection is a house to house one because the committee in charge of the function pf recognition., irealise that nearly every one in the town would want to make some appropriate donation, and that if ‘bona fide’ collectors i with receipt-books Were to approach 'the citizens at some convenient time ! and some convenient place, namely I their homes, then surely that way ' would be better than a haphazard collection spread over but a portion of the 1 community—and that portion, usually j the shop-keepers. I In a word, then, the method of collecting i s a matter of convenience, the ; gift itself a purely voluntary one and a j true reflection of the community’s re- ) gard because everyone has had an opportunity of contributing, and we think all will agree, a gift that is rightly de-

served. Your complimentary leader to Mr O’Brien was without doubt widely appreciated. Thanking you, I am etc. J. L, TURNER, Chairman. Presentation Committee. Hokitika, November 10, 1036.
