TAIHAPE, November 9.
The rumour that ~Walter Devon, a rahbiter on a sheep station at , Moa-
wlfango, had won the .first prize in the Melbourne Cup sweepstake was confirmed to-day. The correct ticket was lodged;, ifo a bank in Taihape. The ticket „was sold by Miss J. Collins, of Adelaide Street, Tasmania, who receives. ..The winner gets £50,030. ; Mr Devon is 52 years of age. He was born at Gimmerburn, Central Otago, „and served in the South African War noth the New Zealand troops. He; also served in the .Great War .as a' lieutenant in the Cheshire (British); Regipient. He has lived in Taihape for 10 years. He was employed, formerly, by Mr It. H. Lowry, of Ohinawarua station, and lately by Messrs Duncan and Tillev, of Springvale station. Interviewed to-day, Mr Devon said: “Yes, rabbiting is my occupation, but I don’t know what it is going to be ih the future.”
