The rumour that ~Walter Devon, a rahbiter on a sheep station at , Moa-

wlfango, had won the .first prize in the Melbourne Cup sweepstake was confirmed to-day. The correct ticket was lodged;, ifo a bank in Taihape. The ticket „was sold by Miss J. Collins, of Adelaide Street, Tasmania, who receives. ..The winner gets £50,030. ; Mr Devon is 52 years of age. He was born at Gimmerburn, Central Otago, „and served in the South African War noth the New Zealand troops. He; also served in the .Great War .as a' lieutenant in the Cheshire (British); Regipient.
