Fenton quid a passenger, Eric Johnson, supervisor of the Eastern Extension Telegraph at Darwin, managed to struggle clear. Both were admitted to hospital with minor injuries.
Fenton had just taken off for Bathurst Island, where an influenza epidemic is raging among the aborigines, when the engine began to lose revolutions. Fenton attempted to land on the golf links, but tlie plane lost altitude rapidly .and crashed among trees, being destroyed as the result.
