LONDON, November 9

Four masked men, on being informed the way to the Wallace Monument, near Stirling, stole Sir .William Wallace’s gigantic twohanded sword. William Kidd, the '7O-vear-ol<| caretaker, opened the main door in response to knocking. The men told Kidd they were Scottish 'Nationalists, and said : “We have come for the sword.”

. They locked Kidd in his room and then Jclimbed to the third flour, smashed the glass case containing the sword, and escaped in a car. The sword was transferred to the monument in 1888 from Dumbarton Castle, where it had lain since W allace wag captured.
