(United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright)

NEW YORK, November 6

Ac major crisis in the Atlantic coast shipping strike was averted when the prosecutor, Mr Dewey, declined the request of Mr John Franklin, president of the International Mercantile Marine Company, to in-, tervene. The tension between the rump command of the- strike and the union has increased, however, as in spite of the strikers’ demands the eii'listement of substitute crews lias continued at San Francisco. Mr Edward McGradv (Assistant-, Secretary for Labour) gave both sides,., until - noon to-morrow to show a conciliatory spirit. Otherwise he is flyng back to Washington, no denied that he would seek intervention by the President. ' The strikers are undecided on the safety of crews for the removal ol' perishables from ships. Owners are using ‘‘dry ice” on ships at Baltimore.

The strike caused the cancellation of sailings' l at Boston. Three ships sailed/ manned by substitues. There is a partial truce at Philadelphia. Four arrests were made at Jacksonville for picketing.
