The Fact that the abolition oi capital punishment has been a plank in. the Labour platform for many years, and that individual members of tho party are opposed to capital punishment. will not be a factor will enter into the Executive Council’s consideration of the fate of Eric Mareo. The Council will consider the case on its merits. It will take into consideration the unusual circumstances existing in the Mareo household at. the time of the murder, the possibilities hf Mareo being influenced by liquor "or drugs, recommendation of mercy by the jnrv in the first trial and the confidential report of the presiding judge in the second trial. Tt is considered m no t unlikely that th« death penalty will tie carried out. Werp there no circumstances which the Eveentive Council could take ir + o consideration, then the Cabinet woi he faced with the alternative of approving the death centenee. or having the law altered to bermit its abolition.
