An application was received by the Borough Council last evening from Mr Lumby, seeking permission to conduct a “big wheel” amusement in Cass Square from .January 25 to February 16 inclusive. Permission was granted, a rental of £1 a day "oeing charged.

The Bank of New Zealand has received the following advice from its London office :—The wool sales have opened with strong competition and a large attendance of buyers. There is an active demand by all branches of the trade. Compared with the close of last series, merino is Jd to Id, fine crossbred Id, medium and coarse crossbred .j-d per lb higher.

Last evening about 6.30 o’clock Mr J. Bush in a Canterbury Club Moth plane arrived from Christchurch. At the same time Mr J. C. Mercer arrived from Waiho with passengers. Mr Mercer had two other passengers to take to Waiho and left shortly after. Mr Bush in the Moth plane accompanying him. If the weather clears sufficiently, both planes should arrive back at Hokitika this afternoon. ,

Providing weather conditions are suitable Mr C. M. O’Hara who recently flew the Tasman will be arriving at the Hokitika aerodrome on Monday next. A number of passenger flights at 7s 6d per head will be made during the day. All proceeds go to the local Returned Soldiers’ Association. A limited number of tickets will be issued, and application should be made to the secretary (Mr R. Paterson) Returned Soldiers’ Association as early as possible.

There was a decided change in the weather last night. After a series of fine days with changes threatening and then clearing away again, the wind from the south west changed suddenly about sundown, and a strong northerly gale commenced to blow. Mrs J. Onnradson (Welieka\ Miss It Ward (Arnhura) and Miss M. Carroll (Greymotith) left yesterday to attend the wedding which will take place at ■St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Dunedin, on Monday next, of Helen Mary, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs R. C. Woods, Hampden, Otago, to James Patrick, eldest son of Mr and Mrs B. Ward, of Arabura. Mr Ward is-well-known on the West Coast, and was a clerk in the Magistrate’s Court at Hokitika prior to going to Dunedin, where he is now practising as a solicitor.

That some misconception seemed to exist regarding the Hokitika Borough Council’s right to water at Lake Ivanieri was mentioned by the Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry) at the special meeting of th e Council last evening to deal with the question of the borough water supply. Under the Mining Act, whereby these rights are granted, the Council has a very complete right to the water granted. It the right to eight heads from the Lake, and has no power to sell, lease, or transfer these rights, which endure for all time, unless surrendered to the Crown, and there was no possibility of the Borough relinquishing them. Kanieri Electric, Ltd. had given every assurance it would do what it could to assist the Council to retain its rights.

A special meeting of the Westland County Council will be held at 7.31 o’clock t -night to wait on the visiting Members of the Cabinet, the Hon. B. ,Semple, Minister of Public Works, and the Hon. P. C. Webb, Minister of Mines. The Mayor of Hokitika (Mr G. A. Perry) will join with the County Chairman (Mr B. Ward) in tendering the Ministerial party a welcome to the district. At the conclusion of the deputations an adjournment will be made to the refreshment room at the Soldiers’ Hall, where the local bodies will unite in a joint recognition of the official visit. To-morrqw the party visits Ivokatahi and Koiterangi, afterwards inspecting the hospitals. In the farming districts, the visitors will be tendered morning tea A
