MAGISTRATE’S COURT

CASES HEARD AT HOKITIKA.

The following cases were dealt with before Mr" H. 'Morgan, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Hokitika today. ON LICENSED PREMISES.

After evidence by Constable A. lb Wilson, two men were each fined £1 and costs 10s for being found on the premises of the Commercial Hotel after hours. Witness said he. saw them leaving the premises, neither having any excuse to offer. Another man) seen leaving the premises of the Dunedin Hotel was fined £1 and costs 10s.

Defendant’s excuse was that he had been to see a boarder in 'the Hotel.

UNLIGHTED VEHICLE.

Fred Saxon, for leaving a motor lorry unlighted in Revell Street, was fined 5s and costs £1 2s 6d.

MAINTENANCE ORDER BREACH

Joseph Richard Bell was charged on two counts with breach of his maintenance order. He was convicted and discharged, an order being made on his wages to meet arrears. ’

JUDGMENT BY DEFAULT

Judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the following cases: — Westland Hospital Board v. William Andrew Craig, £2O Is, and costs £3 Is. fid; Westland Hospital Board v. Nathaniel Brown £7, and costs £1 5 S Gd.

CIVIL CASES

Judgment for plaintiff was given in the case of S. T. R. Havill v. Hector Herrick, £4O 14s, and costs £4 ss, being a claim for rent. An order for possession in respect of a dwelling was granted Gordon Davidson against Joseph Richard Bell. Judgment for £34 rent with costs was also given.

DANCEROUS SPEED

W. Grady was charged with driving a motor-car at a dangerous speed. The inspector said that, on December 7, he noticed defendant travelling along Fitzherbert Street from the Cemetery Hill. He appeared to be going fast, and witness “put the stopwatch” on him, revealing a speed of. over 30 miles an hour. Defendant’s only excuse was that he was in a hurry to keep an appointment. Defendant admitted lie had been travelling between 35 and 40 miles an hour until he approached the Hokitika borough boundary when he slowied down to 25 miles an hour, which speed he did not think he had exceeded. Defendant was fined £l, and costs £1 11s th e -Magistrate saying that speeding in a borough must be stopped.
