MAORIS V. QUEENSLAND. (Australian Press Association.) BRISBANE, July 12. “Rugby football has done much to consolidate the Maori tribes in New Zeaand,” said Mr Tahiwi, at the reception tendered by the Queensland Rugby Union to the Maori team. “You play in our yard; we play in your’s; and wo are friends for lito, that is the principle of the game,” said Mr Tahiwi.
Mr H. Bruce, representing the Queensland Government, attended, lie said that the Maoris in the spheres of football, music and art were without a peer.
At the team’s practice this morning, Mr Wallace, the manager-coach, concentrated on scrummaging. There is a new hooker, and lie is pleasing the coach more.
The influenza germ is busy still, and there is now the possibility of Chase being the next victim. If so, the team will be short of its class five-eighths, following on Reedy’s bout of ’flu and Kotua’s bad leg Hayes will not now be available for the Queensland team on Saturday. P. L. Dixon takes his place.
