Most of the catgut manufactured in Britain is imported from New Zealand in big frozen blocks. It is prepared from the intestines of certain animals, particularly sheep. To prevent it deteriorating during transit it is frozen before being shipped. On arrival at the factory it is thawed and then made into thin threads which are twisted to make strings for musical instruments and tennis rackets, and threads lor surgical sewing. It is almost impossible to determine what percentage of the 4,309,842 sausage casings exported to Britain last year were used for the manufacture of catgut. One leading meat exporter in Auckland stated that the principal trade was in sausage casings and that catgut was a side line. The value of the trade in casings last year was £393,985. A leading business nian who is interested in the catgut trade in the Dominion, stated that the imports into New Zealand were about £20,000 annually.

iNliss Adele and Miss Mary Bucklin, and Mr Frederick Page arrived last evening and are the guests of Mr and Mrs H. L. Michel of Brittan St. They were delighted with the view of the Alps and the hush on the journey across and regret that shortness of their stay will prevent them from seeing more of Westland. Questioned about the Hokitilja Musical Society, they said that they had come across few societies in New Zealand so advanced, and that in the formation and ideals of this Society, Hokitika led the rest of New Zealand. The radio indeed opened up great possibilities, but the lack of the personal element made broadcast music cold and mechanical. The Misses Budilin studied originally at Mills College, Bcrkely, California, and later on in Paris and Berlin (where their father was in the diplomatic ‘service. They have specialised in chamber music and for a period worked under the Pro Art Quartet of Brussels—one of the three or four leading string quartets in the world. They are on a short visit to Now Zealand where their father is American Consul General, and have given recitals in Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin with Mr Page. They expressed their pleasure at having been invited to play in Hokitika and were enthusiastio about the prospects of the Musical Society. Mr Page is shortly leaving for England to study further, possibly under Sir Ralph Vaughan Williams. He took his Mus. Bac. degree two years and until recently held ,a prominent position with the Broadcasting Board in Wellington. He has been prominent both as a performer and an organiser in musical circles and the mid-day recitals at Canterbury College were originated by him.

The continued demand for white pine in Australia Jias been principally responsible for the great fillip given to the timber industry oil the Coast. Mills are operating at full time, and their output is regularly finding its way to the rail head. The last ' twelve months have seen a wonderful increase in the industry’s activity, which is now playing a big part in the district’s welfare. Waggons laden with timber are regularly leaving Hokitika from mills in South Westland principally and from others in the vicinity, and the railway authorities are frequently hard pressed to provide sufficient waggons to cope with the demand. Yesterday no less than 450 tons, representing over 300,050 feet, were railed through from Ross and Ruatapu.
