The committee of the Hokitika Poultry Club met last evening when Mr F. Grouiskv presided. Final arrangements were made in connection with the f- rth_ coining show on Friday and Saturday. July 23 and 27. It was reported entries were coming in satisfactorily, and when they closed on Saturday, it is anticipated the total will be at least equal to expectations. As in former years, the knitting section should again be popular, and strong , entries in this section are expected. Advice was received that a large number of Christchurch birds would be entered. Arrangements are finalised for the special excursion train which will bring many visitors to Hokitika for the Show. The committee decided to stage a wheelbarrow “derby” on the Saturday evening, the finishing post being- at the Soldiers’ Hall. Good prizes will be offered, and full particulars will be announced later.

A very pleasant evening was held at the residence of Mr and Mrs J. Ackers last Thursday to mark the occasion of the coming of age oT their eldest daughter, Elsie Pearl. There were about fifty guests present. Tho guest of the evening was the recipient of many pretty and useful gifts. Mrs Millar, of Kaiiiinu, presented Miss Ackers with a beautiful xylonite duchess set. the gift of her mother, father and sisters. She congratulated Miss Ackers, and hoped that that evening would always remain a red-letter on a in her memory. Mr Percy Muir responded cm behalf of Miss Ackers. The large birthday cake was then cut. A gold key on which each guest had written their name was presented to .Miss Ackers hv little Jean Edwards. The usual toasts were honoured, Mr Percy Muir responding on behalf of Miss Ackers and her parents. Birthday greetings were also extended to Master 'Torn Sherriff, M iss Nellie Woolhouse, and Mr A. Edwards, snr., whose birthdays took place that day, and were guests of the evening also. A delightful supper was then handed round. After twelve o’clock, a birthday cake for wee Norma Edwards was cut. and her health drunk—that heing flic dawn of her first hirthdav. The singine of “Auhl Lang Syne.” and “For She’s a Jolly flood Fellow” brought a pleasant evening to a close.
