SYDNEY BEACH

SHARK-PROOF ENCLOSURE PLAN SYDNEY, July 8. ’ The council at Manly has decided that a permanent shark-proof enclosure, should be built at South Steyne. It has authorised the construction of the enclosure by private enterprise. The conditions provide that the council will grant a franchise for 20 years, subject to departmental consent, and, at the expiration, of that period, the structure will be handed to the council in good repair and free of cost or liability. The lessees would be allowed to charge one penny a person for admission to the enclosure.

The Mayor of Manly said recently that the fear of sharks had affected surfers. Meshing would only create a feeling of false security. Offers! had been made to erect this enclosure free of cost to the council. Any scheme must he approved by the proper authorities, and have the necessary bjmds and safeguards provided. If a satisfactory net was erected, said the Mayoi, it would revolutionise surf bathing at Manly.
