OVERSEAS DEERSTALKERS IN N.Z

At the annual dinner of deerstalkers this evening, a number of speakers voiced a. (strong protest against the attitude taken up by the Department of Internal Affairs which has informed the National Rifle Association of New Zealand that it could not be a party to encouraging anyone to come to Non Zealand for stalking.

It was reported the Department had boon asked to pay the shipping charges for sending home a mounted deer’s head to he displayed with the collection of trophies in the National Rifle Association pavilion at Bisley. A reply was received from the Department that the request could not be granted. Then followed the statement”: “The Department cannot be a ~.party to encouraging anyone to come to New Zealand for stalking.” Instances were given by stalkers present where Government culling parties had been sent in to stalking blocks reserved or overseas sportsmen only a few days before the visitors took up their block. Th,a case of Lord Latymer in South Westland was cited, it being alleged that he was subjected two years ago to interference by a Government culling party. The action of the Government party in sending home a party of Southland stalkers from Mnnapouri this season, and in refusing them the right to go into dear country for stalking, was quoted. A resolution was passed by the doer stalkers this evening condemning the attitncV of the Department in opposing the visits of overseas stalkers.
