POLICE STRATEGY
U.S. KIDNAPPERS GANG FOILED

SAN FRANCISCO, June 5
Federal police—known as “G (Government) men,” listed one ot their number, who closely resembled the intended victim, to trap a member.of a kidnapping gang at Pasadena to-day. The gang had been threatening the president of the Los Angeles Bankers’ Association, Mr Herbert Ivey, unless h e paid 70,000 dollars (about £14,000). The decoy, resembling Ivey, went to a pre-arranged place, and picked up a note in a tobacco tin. Under the nimble (“dickey”) seat of his car was a detective operating a two-day radio set. The decoy carried the tin to a specified place and departed. Presently a carload of concealed detectives saw a car drive up. The occupants got out, picked up the tin and continued on down the highway. Then the police car roared into action. Tlj 0 detectives forced the kidnapper’s car to the kerb. The driver opened fire on the police, hitting Lieutenant Perry, whose armour deflected the bulletThe gangster soon fell, wounded by six. bullets. lie was taken to hospital. His condition is grave.
