The trunk dn which Miss sKaye’is body ■ wag ’ found, and the hammerhead, with which the prosecution alleged (l she was killed, were exhibited at the Lewes Assizes, at the opening, of the trial of Jack Notyre, charged with the Brighton trunk murders,, who pleaded not guilty. Mr J. D», Cassels, prosecuting, said Miss. Kaye was last seen alive on May iO, at the Skylark Oafc, Brighton, where Notyre, under thq name of Mancini, was working as a waiter. Miss 'Kay’s sister, Olive Watts, received a telegram purporting to be from vio.lette. dated Brighton, May 11, saying she was going abroad. Notyre thereafter said,’Miss Kaye had gone to Paris. He gave Miss Atteril, who was employed at the Skylark, some clothing, saying Miss Kaye had not taken them.
Mr Cassels related alleged conversations, Notyre declaring: “The missus went away after I bashed her, adding “what’s the good of fisting a yromgn? You should slosh her with a hammer like I did.”
Notyre slept for two months in a basement in Kemp Street beside the trunk containing the body. He eventually left saying that soon Kemp Street would ’be famous, and that his picture would soon appear in the newspapers. A furniture salesman, in evidence, said he s °ld the .trunk to Notyre. A handwriting expert, giving evidence, said the printed capitals in which the original telegram to Miss Kaye’s sister was, written, were identical with those,, on the menus Notyre wrote at the Skylark Cafe. The case.', was adjourned.
