CURSE OF WAR
ENORMOUS COST ARCHBISHOP’S DENUNCIATION. {Australian Press Association). (Received this day at 9.30 a.m.) MELBOURNE, December 8. Stating that 15/- in every pound taxation was devoted to paying for past, present and future wars, the Catholic Archbishop Downey of Liverpool delivered a striking address at the Town Hall. He said each year saw the progress of the science of annihilation as the forces of chemistry and physics were harnessed to the chariot of carnage. The world’s military bill was now £3,000,000 daily. Warfare had now changed from the clash of valorous men to the conflict oi blindly destructive forces. War no longer provided the hour of glorious life. Education was the key solution to peace and the movement should begin in schools. History should not glorify militarism but expose the horrors of war. Exaggerated nationalism which despised foreigners should be eradicated, and its place taken by the spirit which recognised 'the brotherhood of man.
