(Received this day at 11 *4O a.rod LONDON, Discussing the conclusions reached independently in Australia and * in entomological laboratories here to the effect that sex ratio insects can be miajkedly influenced by partial starvation in the larvae, Professor W. JMonro, of the Imperial College of ■Science, told the “Morning Post” that experiments chiefly with the e ‘flour’ beetle provided clear proof that. i n least one form of Lfe, sex can. be influenced by outside factors, and this is done after fertilisation. “Suppose the results were applied to human beings, it would be possible for a preponderance of male births’in war lime, due to food .shortage, and equally the modem slimming of women might make its effect' felt. Admittedly these are speculations, hut in the present state of knowledge we ought not to close our minds to anything.’
