He was Attorney-General in the Hard Administration, which was formed after the 1928 general election, and retired from Cabinet oh tlie formation of the Coalition Government in T93l* Sir Thomas represented a Dunedin constituency in the House of Representatives irom 1901. to 1928, when he retired from the House and was ’appointed to the Legislative Council. . The first time he sought a seat- in Parliament was in 1896, when he unsuccessfully stood against Mr Arthur Morrison, and three other candidates for Caverslnun. Mr Seckluu was in power at this time. Ho did liot contest the next election, jn 1899, when-Mr A. Morrison was again returned, but when Mr Morrison died in 1901 Sir Thomas made his second attempt to enter Par-. Lament, and was successful. Thereafter he had an enviable political record, us, be withstood all attempts to wrest the seat from him. In the House he father-' erl a number of legislativeproposals.. He was a pioneer in bringing before the House indeterminate sentence proposals in criminal cases.
