SUBSTANTIAL FINES

Fines totalling £145 were imposed on 37 of the 40 men who appeared before Mr Hunt S.M. in the Police Court on gaming charges, brought forward as the result of a raid by detectives on premises in Queen Street. Raymond Lewis, asked by Chief Detective Hammond to have been the operator of a pak-a-poo bank, was fined £SO. One of bis assistants was fined £25. “This is the first time in my experience that a European has been charged with operating a. pak-a-poo bank.” Mr Hammond said. The game is being conducted on a very large scale in Auckland and has caught- on with a certain typo. Lewis had been in court previous-v for bookmaking.
