HON. E. W. ALISON RETIRES

ALLOWANCE OF £BOO A YEAR. AUCKLAND, Jan. 16. The remarkable record of service at--taia- d by4hb*H’ott’®f*Wi'*Alison, as managing director of the Devcnport Steam Ferry Company for the past 50 j years was biought tt> u close this week, when a special general meet fig of shareholders accepted his resignation and resolved unamimously that’ he granted a retiring, allowance. Mr Alison’s salary and fees as mails; aging director of the company totally £1450 a year. The retiring allowance granted him amounts to £BOO a year,;-, which wi’l be paid subject to th£: finances of the corrp ny permitting. ;' Mr Earnest Davis moved that a retiring allowance be granted Mr Alison for his personal benefit amounting to £BOO a year, to be paid s o long as the finances of the company permitted and subject to the directors’ discretion from time to time. He referred to the regret which all shareholders would feel in the severance of Mr Ali-on’s relations with the company. He had been its founder when its was established with a c-pital of £IO,OOO. The issued capital to-day was £150,000, and the company had afforded a passenger service unequalled in the world for cheapness. The efficiency of the management under Mr Alison’s care could be indicated by the fact that, of the many million passengers who had used the company’s vessels in the past 50 years, no life had been lost and there had never been a serious accident, added Mr Davis. That, spoke volumes for the good discipline and management of the company. The. company had never abused its monopoly of the harbour service. Many residents of Devonport and in the citv itself would f?l regret at the br.aking o the association which had endured practically to the limit of living memory, and that severance would l>e regretted also by every employee of the company.
