WESTLAND LICENSING COMMITTEE

ANNUAL AIEETJNG

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 4th

The Committee met at noon. Present: Messrs W. AI el dm in S.AI. (Chairman), J. Kyle, F. McGregor, T. R. Cliesterman, Kent and J. Goodall.

Inspector Fitzpatrick and Sorgt King represented the police and Air Bettel the Health Department, and Alessrs .J. A. Murdoch, C. J. Sellers, J. Hannan. McDonald and A. R. Elcock appeared for various clients. Inspector Fitzpatrick asked the opinion of the Committee in regard to are escapes, where the old idea of fire escapes in regard to ropes were provided. He favoured a balcony outside each top storey window, with a suitable ladder.

.Messrs Hannan and Murdoch suggested that consideration he given at next quarterly meeting as it was impossible for them to report lor clients at the present meeting. The Chairman stated the Committee had given consideration to the question of lire escapes. They recognised that the same conveniences were not necessary in all hotels, but proper lire escapes should he provided in all buildings of more than one storey. The committee felt it would not he right to insist on these alterations being made at the present meeting, hut they wished to make it known that at the next annual meeting. the Committee will expect to find from reports and plans that are placed before them that ample provision has been made for five escapes that will satisfy both the police and committee. The Committee did not desire costly escapes hut required that ample provision he made for the safety of the inmates.

The whole of the applications wore granted, with the exception of three in Grey mouth (Criterion. Commercial. Royal) which were adjourned for three months pending necessary repairs in the two first-named, and erection of now structure in the last one. The Committee rose a 1 pun.
