VANCOUVER, Feb. 15

The City of New York is still two hundred miles away. Captain Melville apparently trying to get into the lee of the barrier where the seas will be less severe and lie can make more headway against a wind, which still Holds from the east here, and is southeast at the ship, then he can turn to the east and skirting the barrier reach the Ray of Whales. He reported choppy seas, which confirm the impression among sailors here lie is getting under the lee of the barrier. A blizzard is blowing, however, and visibility is very poor. He does not mention the fortification of ice on the ship to-dav, so apparently that condition is not getting any worse and winds up his message saying all are well. The ship’s crew must be worn out, however, as they have had continual gales and battles with high seas and ice since leaving the pack, If all goes well they should reach there in a few days, and we certainly hope- so, as a calm spell now will bring freezing weather.

Piper and Kaye landed at Amman in Syria, whither, they returned after getting half-way to Baghdad, when caught in a storm. The flight resumes on Monday.
