U.S.A. CLAIMS
THROUGH WILKES AND BYRD. (United Press Association.—By Electrio Telegraph.—Copyright.) LONDON, Dec. 2. The Washington newspaper. “The Washington Post,” in an editorial, declares that 'Commander Byrd’s Polar llight has strengthened the United States’ claim to the Antarctic. The “Past” says that the British claims to Antarctic are based on nothing but impudence and effrontery.
It is ini in ted out that Lieutenant Wilkes, of the United States Navy, discovered the Antarctic in December Oi 1832, whereas the Britisher, Captain Boss, did not sec any land there prior to the vear 1840.
The newspaper contends that Commander Byrd’s expedition has been the more practical. It adds: “He has discovered new lands, and has claimed them and occupied them for the United States.”
