MEETING OF HOUSEHOLDERS
ONE MILE HALL, AIUHURA. A meeting of householders took place at One Mile Hall on Saturday, 30th lilt, at 8 p.m. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the consolidation of country schools with Hokitika. A very representative gathering oif householders of the district were present. Three members of the Canterbury Education Board were also present by invitation, namely, Mr R. Wild (Chairman), Mr Banks, and Mr Armitage. Mr T. N. Bond was elected chairman of the meeting. < The chairman briefly introduced the visiting members of the Board. Mr Wild outlined the advantages of inaugurating a motor service to convey pupils from Humphreys Gully and Arahura district to Hokitika school, emphasising the advantages of a large school fully staffed byteachers over the present system.of several small country schools. . ;•
Messrs Banks and Armitage supported Mr AVild’s. remarks and enlarged considerably on the advantages enjoyed by consolidation in Canterbury district, and pointed out that without exception once consolidation became operative, the participants in the altered conditions were, very satisfied and on no single occasion bad any one expressed dissatisfaction or desire to revert To the old system. A motion was then put to: the meeting. It was proposed-by Mrs; Douglas, seconded by, Mrs MoSaveney, (that this meeting approves of the .suggested consolidation. The motion I ].,’was. carried unanimously. " c/'iEyv
Previous to vfchis motion- being put, the dhatnhan asked if ’there Avere any questions to,,be asked.,U;-;Airs, Douglas asked: “If this schemer were carried out would the successful- tenderer be allowed to tender for mail carriage so as to secure the householders a ‘ Rural Delivery Service ’ ? ” Air Wild replied that the first and last'thought of the Board was safe carriage of the children, but. Air Armitage thought that the matter might be arranged. Air Wild suggested that a committee of three he appointed to confer with the Humphreys and Arahura School Committees.' 1 ‘f.-r
