A monster eel, measuring about sft and weighing about 251 b, came to the end of his sinuous career in a peculiar (Way on Tuesday night. The eel. which was in the head waters of the 'Avon as it flows through Ilam, the residence of M,r Edgar F. Stead, attempted to pass under a water-wheel which isuworkqd by the stream, and too late found that the free space was not sufficient. It became jammed between the wheel and the bed of the river and was held there as by a. yvee. It struggled frantically, as was evident by marks on the lmdv, hut could not fi‘,o,o itself, and death follower 1 from the inexorable pressure,- The water-wheel was stopped, and an investigation showed that the blockino agency was the body of the eel. It is said that a similar occurrence took place in the Heathcote 'River many years ago, an eel weighing about 751 b trying conclusions with a water-whoel, and being crushed to death in the process.

Mr T. A. Johnston, District Engineer, who is in the southern .district this week, inspecting the progress in connection with public works expenditure, lias stated to the County authorities that a grant will be made for unemployment for the further prosecution of Dorothy Falls road at Lake Kaniefi. The late expenditure has cleared the road up to a certain point, ana the way is clear now for motor traffic, with a turn out at the end of the roadway. The tourist dressing shed near Haris Bay will also he in hand very shortly, arrangements having been made for the erection, and the building will be available for tbe •bathing 1 now opening. Respecting the extension of Dorothy Falls road; the route ahead is to be surveyed through to the locality of the Falls, and when the line of road is determined, morn will be found for the employment ot la ,number of men. It is intended ultimately to carry this road round to the Upper Kokatahi district, via the Styx river, and such a 1 highway will be a useful and popular thoroughfare.

Speaking of the progress of the bridges in South Westland, Mr T. A. Johnston District Engineer, Stated to the County authorities, that the bridges at Oemoeroa and Dochert'y creek would be pushed ahead, and for that purpose a second bridge foreman was being .sent into the district. McCullough’s Creek bridge on the Main Highway, was being advanced as quickly as possible, and when completed the bridge team would he moved on to erect McDonald's creek bridge further south, practically the last of. -the smaller streams to be bridged on the road between Hokitika and Waiho Jorge. Mr Johnston mentioned that a suspension bridge was now being, designed for the Fox river bridge which would be the first crossing on the urea t South Road beyond Weheka. For. tourist use and for readier access to the Fox Glacier a suspension bridge for pedestrians was to be erected shortly to connect with the Glacier track on tne south side of the river, and by means of the bridge and track visitors would have very easy access directly on,to the ice of, the Fox Glacier without! any tedious; climb over'the rough moraine. This greatly improved access would prove a boon, and be the means of rendering the Fox Glacier very popular with visitors.

It is understood some small tourist votes are being authorised for expenditure in South Westland to improve access to attractive resorts. One of the votes which will be available shortly will be £250 for Waino to Cooks tracks, 1 via the ocean beach. This route, is very popular for riding parties, travelling from Wailio Gorge by way of the Wailio river flat, to the sea _ beach, thence along the foreshore to Gillespie’s, and then by Pekanga track to Welieka. The round trip is a very interesting one, covering a variety of remarkable scenery, while the view oi 'the Southern Alps from Gillespie’s covers a range of mountain scenery which is one of the most unique panoramas possible to witness anywhei'e. The river and forest scenery traversed along the route is also remarkably fine. Another work in the same locality contemplated is a road to Lake Matheson. The lake is a favourite resort with photographers, supplying as it dcies a glimpse of Mounts Cook and Tasman in a picturesque setting, and very many photographs of the unusual view have been taken since Mr H. Peart secured the first picture in a rather notable photograph now 1 often reproduced in various journals. These tourist roads supply, much needed access to points of unusual beauty at present rather off the beaten track, and missed by Ao-many visitors.
