The firebell rang out a -/vigorous alarm last night at 7.30 o’clock. The cause of the alarm was an outbreak in the Federal billiard saloon of Mr A, Willmot in Revell Street at the rear of Mr J. Breeze’s hairdressing saloon. It appears that Mr Willmot was heating a tin of tar on an open fire when the tar boiled over and ignited. There was a considerable blaze and dense smoke. Several young men were in the saloon at the time and at once gave the alarm. The flames were soon 'over-powered and the damage done was mainly caused by smoke from the heavy fumes of the tar. The Fire Brigade were promptly on the scene, but their services were not required. The alarm brought out the whole town, a large crowd gathering in the vicinity , very quickly, motor cars and cycles bringing a large crowd.
