PICTURE TRANSMISSION. THE INITIAL STEP. ' L Bv Telegraph, Per Press Association. , WELLINGTON, October 1. The transmission of pictures by wireless from Sydney to London was accomplished for the first time yesterday, according to wireless information picked up here. The reception in London was good except that there .were some lines'across the pictures.’ The pictures that had been sent from London were deficient in detail and also had lines across them.
EXCESSIVE SPEED COMPLAINT. RAILWAY OFFICIALS COMMENT. CHRISTCHURCH, October 1. Regarding the complaints of excessive speed by the West Coast express, railway officials say the allegations are not warranted. The actual running ol the schedule had been examined and it has been found that the train made up ten minutes in a run of 108 minutes. “ All passengers were,, interviewed and 75 per cent said they did not notice any difference. The matter will he further looked into by the department,” added an official. BAIL REFUSED. CHIUSTCHURCH, Oct. 1. As a sequel to the alleged razorslashing on Sunday night, Ivy Bertha St. George appeared at the Magistrate's Court this morning charged with attempting to murder her husband, George Edward St. George. She was remanded to October 10th. Counsel made application for bail, but Magistrate Levvy refused, the police stilting the woman would have'to he kept under observation. SATURDAY CLOSING HOURS. t • FOR DANCE HALLS. CHRISTCHURCH, October 1. The condition that in future it will be compulsory for dance halls in the city to close at 11.30 p.m. on Saturdays was decided upon by the City Council last night. This will be incorporated in the licenses for halls, when they come up for renewal. A MOTION DEFEATED. CHIUSTCHURCH, October 1. By eight votes to six the City Council decided last night not to join in the Municipal Association’s insurance scheme.
