WHEAT ENQUIRY. WELLINGTON, October 1. Further evidence was heard by the Special Committee of the House of Representatives considering the question of a sliding scale for wheat duties. The statement was submitted by Mr G. S. Bates, representing the New Zealand Poultry Association. Broadly stated the position was, lie said, there were two industries, poultry and wheat of an approximate equal value but wheat was given such a generous measure of Government potection as to render the other' wholly unstable, by being compelled to buy its main supplv of food from a highly protected industry. An appeal was made that the Government at the time it contemplated spending large sums on closer settlement, it should see everything possible was done to enable those already encaged in poultry, mostly small holdings, to retain possession ot their land and plant.
