A SHOE “PINCHER.” .(By Telegraph—Press Association). CHRISTCHURCH, May 27. A man smashed a shop window and took some pairs of shoos from Herbert o>mpany’s Store, Colombo St., last evening. The incident was witnessed by several people, one of whom called the police. In the Court to-day, Thomas John Long, 39, labourer, faced four charges of theft and damage. Ho was remanded till Tuesday. AN INQUEST. WELLINGTON, May 27. An inquest opened on Saturday regarding the death at Petone of Henry Cooper, a boilermaker, employed by the Railway Department, who was injured at Ilutt Railway Workshops on May Ist. Evidence was given that the truck, an R. wagon, that had passed several times before in safety, fouled some heaters standing by the side of the track, through a staunchion on the side of the track leaning over at an angle. The heaters were in a row and under instructions had been given a clearance of at least two feet from the rails When one fell, it fouled the next and so on along the row, several men being caught. The heaters were about seven feet high. tVoss-e.vamined. a witness said the heaters were to he. two feet clear of the rails. , The instruction was not two feet clear of the truck. The truck was hau’ed along by a wire rope from a traverser. Tho inquest as adjourned to Wellington. ’• "OUTCOME OF’ mBtOR. AtTTDENT. . ; L'UV MAETERTON.'May 27. As an outcome of a motor accident u ar Masterton on Saturday, William Hutchinson Gordon, farmer, 42, appeared before the Court this morning charged with being intoxicated while in charge of a motor. He was fined £75 and his license was suspended for twelve months, the Magistrate stating that tlie question exercising his mind was whether accused should be sent to gaol right out. ; DRIVER FINED. !
