The Commrtmvealth Transport Committee has prepared a report dealing with railway! mileage, anch',c(st thereof throughout Australia, alsd'otner transport systems. Railway mileage in Australia is'2sjßos-at a capital cost of L‘312, 000,060, of which £300,000,000 *.s for State-owned railways. The effect of motor .and other competition Avitli railways is shown by the fact that within, the last three years, the railway losses amounted almost to £ L1,000,G00. The Committee estimates the number of motor vehicles in Australia at 565,000, while the capital cost of all railways, roads, .ports, harbours, is set down at £500,000,000.
