In tbe House of Lords, Lords do la Warr moved in favour of Oovermnciit bulk purchases of wheat and meat in order to stabilise prices. He pointed out that SO per cent of Britain’s consumption of wheat and 50 per cent of meat were imported, and these were controlling factors on tbe price of home-grown products. Lord Torres moved an amendment, objecting to the Covernment entrance into commercial trading, which w against public interest. Lord Bledisloe said England bad just bad the best harvest for thirty years, but not a single crop showed a profit, except sugar beet, which was artificially supported by Covernment money. A solution oil' tbe problem lay in cooperation of credit laeilities. He was sure overseas producers would not desire to lie unfair competitors ol fellow farmers} in Britain. Lord Stradbroke said the government was opposed to the nationalisation of most of the country’s trade or foodstuffs. Tbe wartime experience bad shown food control was a most costly business.
