The heavy rain yesterday afternoon prevented the completion of loading operations on the Gael, and consequently her departure for Bruce Bay was delayed until this evening.
The widening of the main highway on the south road, especially in the vicinity of Bake laiitlie, is proceeding steadily, and a great deal of useful improvement is being done. The general effect will he greatly appreciated by traffic, which is a steadily growing quantity on the south trip now.
The Westland County Council has received authority to proceed with the erection of three bridges in the Central Hiding. 1 here arc: One Mile road bridge, Murray Crock bridge (Koitcrangi), and Municipal Creek bridge (Ivoiterangi). The material tor the tli ree bridges is now being assembled, and Mr Wells, County Chairman, has authorised the works to he put in baud as soon as the plant and stall' can he arranged for. 'l'he County ( ouncil is also arranging if or additional road work under grant expenditure authorised on Kauieri Bake road. Considerable widening has been done on Slip Hill, which is to he put in good order. The had turn on Boucher’s Hill on the same road, is also to have attention. The road works will he carried out before the holiday traffic sets in.
The Public Works staff has made good progress with the. creel ion ol Slaty Creek bridge near Waihro Gorge, and the structure is expected to he available for vehicle traffic next week in the event of an emergency. The creek crossing in question has been one elf the most troublesome on the south route, the stream being subject to rapid risings in the event oi rain, due to the proximity to the hills. The fold has also been a rough one, and the bridge will bo a boon to all classes of traffic. Considerable celerity has lieon shown in I lie building of the bridge. The stall engaged on the work will he moved next week to Waikukupa vlioic a new bridge is to he erected. Hie material for this structure is now arriving and is being despatched to the site. The instructions are to push on construction as rapidly as possible, and it is expected the bridge will he available for traffic during January. Mr .Johnston. District Engineer, is using every effort to push on inipoitant works in the district as quickly as the authorities come to hand irom headquarters.
