Johnston, President, on behalf of the Auckland Law Society. After describing Air Alpers’ early struggles and triumph over obstacles till lie entered the legal profession and was appointed to the Bench, Justice Reid said fate which had then dealt kindly with him, struck, and struck with relentless force. He received his deatn sentence within six months. The blow paralysing in its suddenness, but bSs indominatnble spirit soon rnllieit, and within a week of his death sentence, while still in bed following an operation, he started with the assistance of his devoted wife to dictate the story of his life, and in his race with death he was able to complete that story and despatch it to Engand. Tins was done solely for the purpose of affording some financial assistance to those he was leaving behind. Had he lived, His Honour concluded, I believe he would have made a great name on the Bench. We shall miss him sorely, and it will be long before we shall see his Mike again. Our sincere sympathies go out in full measure to his sorrowin it widow and young family. DUNEDIN, Nov. 22. Prior to the commencement of the Supreme Court business, reference was made to the death of Justice Alpers by the President of the Law Society, who said the late Judge was a culturetl gentleman, charming and delightful and highly esteemed.
