COMMENT ON BILL. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 17. The Presbyterian! General Assembly received with expressions of satisfaction the news that the prohibition members in the House of Representatives had carried the day in the fight on the Licensing Bid, but dismay and indignation was expressed concerning Mr Coates’s decision to withdraw the Bill after a discussion in which some speakers referred to “solemn assurances given Ijy the Prime Minister that the Bill would be left to a five vote of parliament. The Assembly expressed disapprobation of the latest action of the Prime Minister. The resolution was carried. That the following telegram be despatched to the Prime Minister’The Presbyterian General Assembly, now in session at Christchurch, hopes you will continue the Licensing Bill in view of your repeated assurances that the Bill should have a fair run, and be left to a free vote of Parliament.’’

NEW ZEALAND ALLIANCE

WELLINGTON, Nov. 17

At a meeting of the Standing Committee of the New Zealand Alliance, held this morning, a resolution was passed. (a) Expressing gratification at the emphatic votes recorded by the House of Representatives against the proposed extension of time between polls in favour of the two issue ballot paper, and in support of a simple majority (b) declaring astonishment that the Prime Minister should have moved to report progress, and so have imperilled the passage of the Bill after the House had so plainly declared its will, (e) respectfully reminding the Prime Minister ot ins repeated assurance that members would he free to deal with the Bill on its merits, and regardless of par v ties, and urging that lie do nothing to obstruct the passage of the BUT.
