(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) KAJAPOI AVOLLEX COY. CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 1. There were some sharp wordy passages at the annual meeting of the shareholders of the Kaiapoi AVoollen Manufacturing Coy, yesterday. Several speakers criticised the director’s polic-y, and there was a lively discussion upon the question of the appointment of a general manager. There is no dividend for ordinary shareholders this year and it was explained on behalf of the directors that they had made frequent attempts to find a man whose qualifications warranted his appointment as general manager. Regarding the financial side, they explained that a mistaken policy on the part of the previous Board of Directors had resulted in the reserves being swallowed up and that in view of this handicap and the depression in trade the present directors had done all that was possible to further the interests of the shareholders.

A special meeting of the Canterbury District Racing Committee was held yesterday to inquire into and take further evidence in tho case of Joseph Nohra of Reoiton who was alleged to have tampered with D. G. Cotton a jockey, and R. McLellan who was in charge of the horse Moorland on the AVest Const during the last Christmas and New Year meetings. The committee found nothing to shake the evidence of MoLelbin and Cotton that they were approached by Joseph Nohra- to pull Moorland, nor was there any evidence to implicate McLellan and Cotton as having been parties to any fraudulent intentions. The Committee therefore unanimously found Nohra guilty of corrupt practices and disqualified him for l'ife.

AVilliani Roy McDonald, ex-manager of the Christchurch branch was charged with the theft of sums totalling £654, the property of the Guardian Assurance Company. He pleaded not guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. STORM DAMAGE. PALMERSTON N.. Sept. 1. Electrical disturbance was experienced in Manawatu District- yesterday afternoon commencing early in the afternoon and continuing until the early evening. Lightning played all round tho countryside, while rain fell in torrents. All varieties of lightning were witnessed, while the rain was particularly heavy and flooding the streets in town to a considerable depth. The telephone service was dislocated to a considerable extent, many instruments being affected. The-major damage was caused by disturbance to the lines of Manawatu and Oroua Power Board. At AA’hakarouge lightning struck the lines while at To Matu a sub-station oil switch was completely wrecked. Lightning also struck tho lines at Fitzherbert and other places. It was 5 o’clock this morning before the last repairs were made to the linos.

From recording instruments at the Board’s station at Biinnvthorpe it appears lightning started in the vicinity of Wliakarongo, then travelled to Biinnvthorpe to Kairanga, Palmerston North, Awapnni, Linton. Despite the deluge in Manawatu, practically no rain fell at Mangahon where there is a. shortage of water to-day. Some steam plants are assisting Mnngahao. A meeting (if the Hockey Tournament Committee decided to postpone matches fixed for to-day till to-mor-row. Tho North Island v. South match is postponed and Friday’s fixtures will be played on Saturday. Rain is still falling. THEFT CHAGE. /tmt.MERSTON N.. Sept. 31. Appearing before Justices at the Police Court this morning Andrew McEwan, a middle-aged labourer, was charged with information by bis wife at present living at Woodville with the theft of sundry articles, furniture and clothing to the total value of fifty pounds. It was stated in evidence that the parties separated at the end of March, his wife closed her home here and went to Woodville and returning later found the articles had disappeared. Defendant several times visited the house, a carter taking away a knpock mattress, while apawn broker stated the defendant sold him sundry household effects, articles and jewellery in ■June. Defendant was committed for trial.
