HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FRIDAY, MARCH 25th

The Council met at 7.30 p.m. Pres-ent-.—Messrs J. Lloyd (voted to the chair), J. King, A. R. Elcock, lv. Orr, and G. Heinz.

An apology for absence was made for the .Mayor.

From Westland Acclimatisation Society applying for use of Cass Square on the occasion of the Christchurch excursion. Received and request granted. Front Westland Racing (Tub asking tunt the tar-sealing that had been previously arranged for with the Council be facilitated as early as possible in view of the approaching Easter meeting: that the tar needed was reserved at"the gas works and the necessary grit had been at the course for some time past.—Received. Air Orr expressed surprise at the statement, that the Council had previously granted the request. As far as he was aware this was the first time it had come before the Council meeting. He moved, however. that the request he granted and the work carried out. The Town Clerk stated that the subject had not been before the Council. All- King seconded the motion stating this was the first ho had heard of the matter. The motion was agreed to.

From Customs Department. AYcilingtnn, stating the closing of the Customs office at Hokitika was being held over, pending further enquiries by the Minister.—Received.

From Free Public Library enclosing an account for payment.—Received and passed for payment. From Afinister of Labour notifying AA'ednosday had been appointed for the weekly half holiday.— Received. From Customs Office, asking for two sureties for bond.—Received. The Alayor and Mr Elcock were appointed. From Postal Department in reference to installation of petrol tanks. —Received.

From Town Clerk. Shannon, enclosing resolution urging subsidies from Main Highways Board for main highways through boroughs. Received. From Ross Borough Council lorwnrding Co ss, share of licensing expo rid i t u re. —Recc i ved. From AV. J. Sliand, Christchurch, relinquishing lease of part reserve in Hampden St.—Received. From City Engineer. Christchurch, forwarding information in reference to pipes in use.—Received. Air King moved that further enquiries be made from other city and borough councils in connection with water supply pipes. Seconded by Afr Orr and carried. From Kmnara Borough Council enclosing CIO Ss share of licensing expenditure.— Received. From Hokitika Sports Committee asking for use of Cass Souare on Easter Tuesday.—Received and request granted.

OVERSEER’S REPORT. ] |,cg to report the following works were carried out during the month:— Livingstone St near the racecourse was badly scoured through a benzine case blocking the pipes, causing the water to overflow, the damage being repaired. The blackberries on both sides of racecourse hill were cut hack and the water tables cleaned out. A quantity of gravel was put at the front of the Central Dairy Factory, also the south footpath of Cass Square was gravelled with screened gravel. The footpaths were chipped and a part ol them was tar sealed. A corner post was knocked out of the Soldiers’ Alcmorinl in Wold St., by a motor car, which was repaired. The water took up a good deal of time at the beginning of the month. A new pipe was put in at the bottom of the cemetery hill in Fiizherbert Street, anil five new ones at the corner of Healey and Park Streets. The pipes removed were white pine amt very rotten. A second-hand pipe was put in in Rollestou Si hut it is not satisfactory as it is still weeping a little. A blow-out took place at the corner of Sate and Stafford Sts, the wire having rusted through. Ibis was repaired with bands. A number of leaks were repaired about town. On Saturday Pith we went along the pipe line as ’far as the Forks, repairing several small leaks. Seven lft and one 2ft: yin pipes were made this mouth. Average ot water in the reservoir lor the month 7ft Sin. —Received. From Alanager of Abattoirs (J. Jarman) reporting there were examined during February—2o cows. 35 heifers, 4,’) bullocks. 232 slice]'. 113 lambs, 12 pigs. 22 calves. at a lower point, so as to prevent tho scouring of the road. It was resolved that the Reserves Committee l>e empowered to have necessary repairs effected to the spouting of the pavilion on (ass Square and to arranged for wire netting of tlie front' of the pavilion to keep out the birds.
