The washout on the railway line between Aickens and Otira is ol considerable extent and delayed traffic on Saturday. On Friday an attempt was made to repair the damaged portion of the line just below Otira, where about 800 feet of rails were washed away, but owing to the river being in high flood the boulders which were put down for

protection were soon swept away into the stream, leaving the breach open again. The river fell for a time, and the water, which had reached to within two inches of the rails receded with it. The railway gangs set 10 work to repair the line, hut in the middle of their efforts the river rose again, and before long the lino was covered by a foot of water, in the face of which the men were helpless. To add to their troubles a second section of the line was washed out. ft is stated that the river changed its course no fewer than three times on Friday. The express travelled to each side of the break on Saturday. passengers having to walk about a mile between the two sections of line to connect with the waiting trains. This caused delay, and passengers by the express did not reach Hokitika until the arrival of the late train at II p.m. Men’s Felt Hats, in all the leading makes, 3s lid to 355. at Hallensteins, Be veil Street.—Advt.
