From Saturday on to 'Wednesday next, our .Canterbury neighbours are holding a festival anniversary marking the period of To years since ihc arrival of the first ships with the foundation members of Canterbury Province. We. on this side of the range, may well take some interest in the event, for Westland at the outset was an off-shoot of Canterbury and the first official administration of our affairs was directed by Canterbury officials. On .March 19th. 18(id. Messrs W. Kolleslou. W. Seed, and W. 11. Kcvoll arrived to umleriake official duties, and on April loth. Commissioner Sale arrived and took up his task, being virtually dictator. In 1800. after a good deal of agitation, West land was granted re- ] resentatiou on the Canterbury l’rovincial Council. Messrs K. Reeves and T. L. Bright were elected in duly to represent Hokitika. Mr d. A. \\ hall to represent Groymouth. and Messrs t. ■Sard' and C. Hoes the rest cl' Wedland. It will he seen Hint in the earliest days nl our history, the relations were very intimate. Kindly thoughts for our friends of the early days will not lie misplaced. In the To vears of time, Canterbury ba s made enormous strides, and with every reason may rejoice that in the Inundations so well laid such a remarkable structure has been reared. Cantorliiiiv was founded with essentially English people, and has been remarkably true to type all these years. It must he pleasing indeed to the remnant ot the. old hand to look hack over tin years and realise all that has been at - ' ( nmplished.
