GOLF.
N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS
In the third round to-day Black beat Ross 2 up and 1, and A. Duncan beat Conway 4 and 3. The two other results were not available at the time of going to press. At" the annual meeting of the New Zealand Golf Association the retiring council—Messrs. R. C. Kirk, H. R. H. Balneavis, A. D. S. Duncan, W. E. A. Gill, M. W. Morton, J. B. Macßwan and A. F. Roberts—and the auditor1— Mr. Ernest W. Hunt—were re-elected. A long discussion centred round a proposal that affiliated clubs should make a levy of 2s per member per year in order to provide a fund whereby extra, professionals might be secured for the benefit of country clubs, to whom they could be hired by the council. Another call on the fund would i be the augmentation of prize money in. j professional matches. On the basis ! of 10,000 players—6ooo men and 4000 | women—in New Zealand the levy' would produce £1000 a year, instead of £250 which the council had at its disposal at the present time. Delegates ' were warmly in approval of the scheme, the only difference of opinion being in ! regard to the method of collecting the ! levy. 2he opinion was also very definitely expressed that pot-hunting professionals were not wanted in New Zealand, but rather the class of men now in the country—men who were good golfers and good coaches. j _ Mr T>. A. O. Lilbume, on behalf of. Queen s Park Qub, Invercargill, moved | as an amendment that a call of one shilling per member be made, but this was not seconded. The motio*, whick was mored by the chairman and seconded by Mr. Duncan, was. carried on1 the voices. After the claims of Miramar, Auckland and Hamilton clubs to have the next championship held on their respective links had been advocated it was resolved, by 52. to 15, on the motion of Mr. Fitzgerald (Manawatii) that the choice, of location for the next championship meeting be left to the council to determine. j
