DEATH OF SEAMAN

Charles Mich--ael Doyle Avas tried on three charges of . : Manslaughter, assault with intent to 'epmmit bodily harm, and assault causing bodily harm. He pleaded ijot .guilty. The case arose from the death •®f William Henry Simpson, an able seaman on th-e steamer Kaituna, on May 11, at the hospital, following a, ■-cyurgical operation in connection with injuries to the shoulder received by •Simpson in a brawl on the steamer on the night of April 2. The evidence for the prosecution alleged that accused assaulted and threw -deceased »ve~ his shoulder, causing dislocation of the shoulder, which lacerated blood vessels, causing internal ! " haemorrhage. It was alleged that death! was due to tne shook of the operation, the anaesthetic ar.d loss of blood, The jury, niter a three homrs' retirement, acquitted accused on all counts.
